Shopify GPSR Checklist: EU Product Page Setup
As of 1 September 2026, a Shopify store offering covered consumer products to EU buyers must show the four GPSR Article 19 information groups before purchase. Shopify recommends the Disclosures product metafield for legally required warnings and a product description or product metafield for other required information. Shopify does not directly provide an EU Responsible Person service.
What changed in this Shopify GPSR guide?
- September 2026: The obsolete
product-template.liquidinstruction was replaced with Shopify Online Store 2.0 product templates, sections, blocks and dynamic sources. - September 2026: The unsupported checkout-consent recommendation was removed. Product-safety information belongs in the online offer before purchase.
- September 2026: The four Article 19 data groups, Shopify's Disclosures recommendation, role boundaries and recall workflow were added.
Does GPSR apply to a Shopify store?
GPSR applies when a covered consumer product is offered to consumers in the EU; using Shopify does not change the product's legal scope. The manufacturer, importer, distributor and Article 16 responsible economic operator keep the duties attached to their actual roles.
A merchant outside the EU does not automatically need a new paid Responsible Person merely because the store uses Shopify. First identify the manufacturer and supply chain. An EU importer may already be the responsible economic operator; otherwise a written authorised-representative mandate may be suitable for the defined product.
What GPSR information must a Shopify product page show?
| GPSR Article 19 information group | What the EU-facing offer must show | Practical Shopify data location | Who owns the accuracy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer | Name, registered trade name or trademark, postal address and electronic address | Product description or dedicated product metafield/metaobject | Manufacturer and merchant publishing the offer |
| EU Responsible Person | When the manufacturer is outside the EU: name, postal address and electronic address of the Article 16 responsible person | Separate product metafield or referenced metaobject; do not merge it with the manufacturer field | The product's actual Article 16 operator and merchant |
| Product identification | Picture, product type and another identifier such as model, batch or serial reference where applicable | Shopify media and native product data, plus a metafield for the identifier used on the physical product | Manufacturer and merchant |
| Warnings and safety information | Applicable warnings or safety information in a language consumers can easily understand in the target Member State | Shopify's Disclosures product metafield/metaobject or another visible product-page block | Economic operator responsible for the information and merchant |
The complete Article 19 online-offer checklist explains the legal data groups. Product-page information does not replace physical labels, packaging, instructions, the risk assessment or technical documentation.
How do you add GPSR information without editing old Liquid files?
For a current Shopify Online Store 2.0 theme, use product metafields and a product-template section or block before editing theme code:
- In Shopify admin, open Settings → Custom data → Products.
- Create separate definitions for the manufacturer, EU Responsible Person and product identifier. Use Shopify's Disclosures definition for legally required warnings where it fits the data.
- Populate the values for every affected product and variant family. Do not paste one Responsible Person into unrelated products without a valid mandate.
- Open Online Store → Themes → Customize and select the relevant product template.
- Add a compatible text, rich-text or collapsible block and connect each setting to the product metafield through Shopify's dynamic-source picker.
- Check the rendered product page, mobile view, every target language and every EU market before publication.
Current Shopify themes normally use a templates/product.json template with modular sections and blocks. A custom Liquid section can still be appropriate for a bespoke theme, but a hard-coded product-template.liquid snippet is not a safe universal instruction.
Do Shopify sellers need a GPSR checkbox at checkout?
No general GPSR rule requires a buyer to accept product-safety terms through a checkout checkbox. GPSR Article 19 instead requires the specified product and operator information to be clearly and visibly indicated in the distance-sale offer. Hiding warnings until checkout is too late for that purpose.
Shopify Checkout UI extensions can add defined checkout components, but extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps are available only to Shopify Plus stores. A checkout extension does not replace the product page, label, technical file or legal role analysis.
What is Shopify's role compared with the seller and manufacturer?
| Task | Shopify platform | Merchant operating the store | Manufacturer or responsible economic operator |
|---|---|---|---|
| Provide storefront fields | Supplies descriptions, metafields, metaobjects, theme blocks and apps | Chooses and configures the data model | Supplies the legally correct source data |
| Publish Article 19 information | Does not complete every product automatically | Displays and checks the data before purchase | Verifies data tied to its legal role |
| Risk assessment and technical documentation | Does not perform the legal assessment | Collects records needed for the offered products | Manufacturer prepares and maintains the required records |
| Appoint an Article 16 operator | Does not directly provide this service | Identifies the product's actual supply-chain route | EU manufacturer, importer, authorised representative or fulfilment provider occupies the role as the Regulation specifies |
| Handle unsafe products and recalls | Provides store and order tools | Stops affected offers and supports customer identification | The operator with the applicable GPSR duty notifies, corrects and cooperates with authorities |
Shopify's current Help page explicitly says the platform does not directly designate an EU Responsible Person. A third-party app can display fields, but installing the app is not a written legal mandate.
How should a Shopify store prepare for a product recall?
A workable Shopify recall process links the physical identifier to the online record and customer order:
- Stop the affected product and variant offers without deleting the evidence.
- Map the affected model, batch or serial range to Shopify SKUs, variants and orders.
- Determine which economic operator must use the EU Safety Business Gateway or contact the competent authority.
- Contact identifiable affected customers directly and use a compliant recall notice where required by GPSR Articles 35 and 36.
- Record the decision, messages, corrective action, refunds or replacements and closure evidence.
Stock quantity alone is not traceability. The store needs a product identifier that also appears on the product, packaging or accompanying document.
Five common Shopify GPSR mistakes
- showing the EU Responsible Person only in a footer instead of on each affected product offer;
- hard-coding one operator address across products that are not covered by the same mandate;
- putting the warnings only at checkout;
- translating marketing text but leaving safety information in one language; and
- treating a Shopify app, theme block or badge as a GPSR certificate.
Shopify GPSR compliance service
Grüner Baum GmbH reviews product scope, Article 16 roles, risk records, technical documents, labels and the Article 19 product-page data before accepting a mandate. The Shopify GPSR Responsible Person service starts at €249 per year for one low-risk product family; theme or app implementation is scoped separately. Request a product review.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add GPSR information to a Shopify product page?
Use Shopify's Disclosures metafield for legally required warnings and product descriptions or metafields for other required data. Connect the product-specific values to a visible section or block in the product template.
Does Shopify provide an EU Responsible Person?
No. Shopify says it does not directly provide a Responsible Person designation service. Identify the correct Article 16 operator from the actual product and supply chain.
What GPSR information must a Shopify product page show?
Show the manufacturer, the EU Responsible Person when required, product identification and applicable warnings or safety information. Keep the four groups distinct and visible before purchase.
Do Shopify sellers need a GPSR checkbox at checkout?
No general GPSR checkout checkbox is required. The Article 19 information belongs in the online offer, and checkout customization cannot replace it.
Can a Shopify app make a product GPSR compliant?
No. An app can store or display information; it cannot create safety evidence, assume the manufacturer's duties or certify the product.
