An Etsy trader who sells to EU buyers should complete **three platform areas** for each affected product: the account-level Economic Operator record, the Manufacturer field and the Product safety info field. Your exact legal duties depend on the product, your role and the supply chain. Typing a name into Etsy does not by itself make a product GPSR-compliant.

## Does GPSR apply to my Etsy shop?

GPSR duties can apply when you act as a **trader**, sell to consumers in the EU and offer a consumer product covered by the regulation. Etsy's own guidance also applies its GPSR workflow to sellers who target EEA countries and Northern Ireland. Etsy does not decide whether your shop is a trader or a private individual. That depends on your actual commercial activity.

Your offer can target EU consumers through shipping destinations, languages, currencies, payment methods or other sales activity aimed at an EU country. If you do not want to sell into Etsy's GPSR markets, Etsy offers an opt-out in Shop Manager. Opting out is a sales decision. It does not make any continued sales into those markets compliant.

## What should an Etsy seller prepare before editing listings?

Prepare your legal identity, product evidence and listing information together. The Etsy fields must match the physical product, the packaging and your records.

| Decision or record | Evidence to prepare | Etsy destination |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Trader status | Business or professional-seller status and target markets | Public shop Seller details |
| Legal manufacturer | Name or trade name, postal address and electronic contact address | Manufacturer field on each affected listing |
| EU responsible economic operator | Operator identity, supply-chain role and, if applicable, written mandate with product scope | Shop Manager > Settings > Partners you work with > Economic Operator |
| Product identification | Product picture, type, model, SKU or another stable identifier | Product listing and Product safety info |
| Warnings and safety information | Product-specific warnings based on the risk assessment and required market languages | Product safety info field and visible listing content |
| Technical records | Risk assessment, test reports where applicable, instructions, labels and traceability records | Retained compliance file; use it to support the listing claims |

You do not normally upload the full technical file to the public listing. It backs up the manufacturer, safety, warning and traceability information that consumers can see and authorities can ask for.

## Which EU economic operator is correct for an Etsy product?

Every covered product needs a responsible economic operator based in the EU. That does **not** mean every non-EU Etsy shop must always buy a separate authorised-representative service.

The right route depends on the supply chain:

1. An EU-established manufacturer can take the role for its own product.
2. An EU importer can take the role when it places a product from outside the EU on the EU market.
3. An EU authorised representative can carry out set tasks when the manufacturer gives it a suitable written mandate.
4. A fulfilment service provider can become the relevant operator in the cases set out in the EU market surveillance regulation, when no earlier operator is based in the EU.

Confirm who the real operator is before you enter details in Etsy. A warehouse, reseller, production partner or consultant is not automatically your EU responsible person.

## How do I add the Economic Operator in Etsy?

Etsy's current official workflow runs on Etsy.com in a browser:

1. Open **Shop Manager**.
2. Select **Settings**.
3. Select **Partners you work with**.
4. Select **Add economic operator**.
5. Enter the operator's name, address and contact details.
6. Save the operator.

Etsy says you cannot currently add or edit the Economic Operator record in the Etsy Seller App. After saving the operator for your account, complete the Manufacturer and Product safety info fields on every affected listing. One shop-level entry does not fill in all product-specific information.

## What must your Etsy offer show under the GPSR?

For a covered product offered to EU consumers, the GPSR requires four information groups. They must be clear and visible in the offer before purchase:

- the manufacturer's name or trade name, postal address and electronic address;
- when the manufacturer is outside the EU, the name, postal address and electronic address of the EU responsible person;
- a picture, product type and another product identifier; and
- any warnings or safety information, in a language consumers in the country of sale can easily understand.

Our [checklist for the required information in online sales](https://eugpsr.de/en/blog/gpsr-online-sales-required-info) explains these four blocks in detail. A general shop policy, a QR code or a document sent only after purchase does not replace information that must appear in the product offer.

## Are handmade, print-on-demand and digital Etsy items exempt?

No. Handmade or print-on-demand status does not create a blanket GPSR exemption. For a physical item, identify the legal manufacturer, the safety rules that apply, the product risks and the correct EU economic operator. A production partner is not automatically the manufacturer or the EU Responsible Person.

Etsy tells traders to assess both physical and digital items in its GPSR market settings. Whether an item is legally covered still depends on whether it counts as a product under the GPSR or another product-safety law. Assess software, downloads and mixed physical-digital products one by one. Do not mark every digital listing as compliant or exempt by default.

## Can one EU Responsible Person cover multiple Etsy listings?

Yes, but only when the written mandate names or clearly groups all covered products and the provider has accepted your supporting records. Colour or size variants can belong to one product family when they share the same relevant design, materials and safety profile.

Do not copy one Responsible Person address into unrelated or unreviewed listings. An Etsy entry does not expand a mandate, does not transfer the manufacturer's safety duties and does not prove that the product complies.

## What are the most common Etsy GPSR mistakes?

- Naming the Etsy shop owner as manufacturer without checking who legally manufactures or markets the product under its name.
- Showing the EU Responsible Person but leaving out the non-EU manufacturer's details.
- Using generic warnings that do not follow the product risk assessment.
- Keeping the safety information only in an image, policy page or post-purchase PDF.
- Treating the Economic Operator field as a GPSR certificate.
- Reusing one mandate outside its accepted product scope.

## When should an Etsy seller request a professional review?

A review helps when the manufacturer is outside the EU, the supply chain has no clear EU operator yet, the product documents are incomplete, or you are unsure which warnings and languages apply. The [Grüner Baum Etsy GPSR service](https://eugpsr.de/en/etsy-gpsr) explains our product review, mandate conditions and current pricing. ## Frequently asked questions about Etsy GPSR

### Does GPSR apply to every Etsy seller?

No. It depends on whether you act as a trader, target an EU market and offer a product covered by the GPSR or by product-specific safety rules. Being handmade is not an exemption on its own.

### Must every non-EU Etsy seller appoint a separate EU Responsible Person?

No. A covered product needs a responsible economic operator based in the EU, but who that is depends on your supply chain. An EU importer may already fill the role. An authorised representative needs a suitable written mandate.

### Where does GPSR information go on Etsy?

Etsy has an account-level Economic Operator setting and listing-level Manufacturer and Product safety info fields. The required GPSR information must stay clear and visible in the product offer itself. A general shop policy or a document sent after purchase is not enough.

### Can one EU Responsible Person cover several Etsy listings?

Yes, but only when the written mandate and the accepted document review cover every product or product family involved. Copying one address into unrelated or unreviewed listings does not extend the mandate and does not prove that the product complies.
